The publication “Women and Housing in Hungary” reveals why the housing crisis affects women particularly strongly, what housing solutions are available to women in Hungary today, and how it would be worthwhile to expand the range of different forms of housing. so that they can respond specifically to the needs of women, including particularly vulnerable groups of women. The researchers and authors of the publication are Zsuzsi Pósfai and Fanni Dés. The research is the result of a collaboration between Periféria Policy and Research Center, NANE Association and the Friedrich Ebert Foundation’ Regional Project on Gender Equality in East-Central Europe.

We consider two main aspects to be important related to women’s housing difficulties. On the one hand, women’s poor economic position in society: women typically earn less and they work in lower positions than men. In addition, in the majority of cases, women bear the burden of household and care work, which further worsens their position in the formal labor market. It is particularly difficult for a single woman with children to provide housing and livelihood when the support structures are missing. Another important aspect is the close intertwining of violence against women and women’s housing crises. Women are most often the victims of violence and abuse by their partners and family members. Leaving abusive relationships is made extremely difficult by financial vulnerability as housing often depends on the perpetrator. The vast majority of women in social service institutions, and who thus experience severe housing crises have been victims of violence against women at some time in their lives. Victims of violence and abuse are over-represented in the social care system in Hungary.
