Vaporwave, Nostalgic Reaestheticization and the Cultural Mechanisms of Digital Capitalism

Aleksandr Shutenkov’s essay explores the cultural meanings and implications of human-machine interaction, taking the musical genre of vaporwave as its starting point. He argues that modern man is stuck on the threshold of a radical existential change, supported by a number of nostalgic aesthetic trends, maintaining the status quo of digital capitalism. The totalisation of the hauntological paradigm is explored, among other things, through the notions of the technological unconscious and liminal spaces.
